PositionAgent Checks ranking in search engines.
RankThis Checks ranking in search engines.

Increase your Search engine ranking:
First of all I'm sure you have all read a million reports on this. This one is different though, I am not going to make this a sales letter. This is just a summation of facts. Read this report. If you have questions mail them to me.
Second: Focus on the major engines. It's more important to rank good in one major engine then to rank good in 10 less unknown engines.
Third: Choose the keywords that you want to rank high for. When choosing those words make sure it's a combination of words. Also some engines are case sensitive that means that 'engine' and 'Engine' are two different keywords. Optimize your pages for lower case keywords. When you enter keywords in a search engine, you probably don't use capitals. You don't, and most people don't. That's why you should optimize for lowercase keywords.
Fourth: Understand how engines work
Algorithms change regularly these days search engines look at:
Keywords found in the <TITLE> area
Keywords found in the <META name = "Description"> area
Keywords found in the <META name = "Keywords"> area
Keywords found in the ALT area of images
Keywords found in the comment tags <!-- >
Keywords found in heading tags <H1>..</H6>
Keywords found in a link
Keywords found in a linked filename
Keywords found in the body of the document.
Al these are also divided in a few areas where engines look. Some may look at the frequency of the words inside the areas, other look at how close the keywords are from the beginning of the area.
Frequency is the number of times a keyword appears divided by the number of total words.
Furthermore, try not to exceed a 35 character limit in the title. The title is often the first thing that appears in search engines. Also a should not be longer as 1000 characters and the description shouldn't be longer than 200 since some engines display that instead of the title in the results form of a search.
Some engines that are not THAT advanced when it comes to algorithms only index the first 20 to 30 words of a page. Make sure your keywords are in this area.
Popularity is another aspect of high ranking in search engines. Get your site linked on as many pages as possible. In AltaVista it's possible to see how many pages are linked to you, in their search field, type
Link:http://www.yourdomain.com
To get many pages linked to you, use FFA links pages every 24 to 48 hours in the beginning until you have some real persistent links on other pages. Using an FFA service is usually free, and will post your link on thousands of sites. You have to repeat this process over and over again every 24 hours, since you are probably rolled of the page already. Doing this will increase your popularity.
Techniques that should be avoided.
Do not Spam an engine with submissions it can and will result in total exclusion from their index.
Do not repeat a keyword more than once in a row, engines are known to give penalties for that.
Don't use keywords that have nothing to do with your site. You may attract visitors that way, but since the audience is the wrong one. It won't make a difference
Don't display text with the same color as the background color. These days engines can check on that and will give penalties for that
Don't use Meta->Refresh tags, some engines don't like that
Don't include to many keywords in your page, when a page is too full of keywords, the engine will see that the density of the keyword is way above normal. Also resulting in possible penalties
